As we have flipped the calendar to the last month of our 75th anniversary celebration, we highlight the blessings of worship and prayer. What an important month to focus on worship and prayer! As we conclude this Advent season, let us remember the reason for the season and make worship a priority.
The first Boar’s Head Christmas Festival was presented at Holy Cross in December 2005. It was a medieval Christmas celebration in music and drama. The presentation of the boar’s head signified the triumph of the Christ Child over sin. Twenty-nine people served on the organizational committee or as support staff, and forty-eight cast members participated in the production. The name of the festival was later changed to the Renaissance Christmas Pageant. Holy Cross presented the pageant annually for ten years.
In November we highlight and celebrate Stewardship and Thanksgiving. What a perfect combination! Stewardship includes our time, treasures and talents, for all of which we should be thankful. Nearly 1,000 people attended the service. A reception was held in the Commons Area following the service. Tours of the new facility were given, and a historical display of pictures, scrapbooks and memorabilia informed members and guests of our history.

Don was a seminary graduate, and Mary’s degree was in nursing education. They completed linguistic studies and jungle survival training. The Murrays developed a written language for the Kalagans, taught them to read, and translated the Bible into their language.

In the 1962 Parish Report, Delbert Strelow, the president of the Walther League, reported that the “leaguers” had an active year. Several leaguers and other adults led devotions and Christ-centered topics concerning issues important to the youth. They attended the District Talent Festival at St. John, the Fall Zone Rally at Ascension, and the Youth Retreat at Camp Horizon near Arkansas City. Five of the leaguers attended Lutheran Service Volunteer Schools during the summer in Winfield and Fort Hays. The leaguers led devotions for shut-ins, went caroling at Christmastime, sponsored a car wash, held an ice cream social, and enjoyed many other fellowship activities.

Throughout the history of the Lutheran church, music has played a key role. In February we have been celebrating the blessing of music. Jim Scherer, former member of Holy Cross, has written a special hymn for our 75th Anniversary titled “Precious Author of the Age.” We will be singing this hymn every month. We are grateful to all who share their gift of music with us. Please thank them when you see them.
Patricia Boughton began serving as one of our church organists in June 1963, and she became the head organist in 1976. Pat served as our head organist until September 2008, and she continued to accompany the adult choir after retiring as our church organist. Dr. Harrison (Bud) Boughton became the Director of Music in July 1966. The congregation had been without a choir for over two years, and our new church choir grew steadily under Bud’s direction. Dr. Boughton and Pat faithfully served as our adult choir director and choir pianist until June 2010.
“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live in Him, rooted and built up in Him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, and overflowing with thankfulness.”
Greetings in the Name of Jesus!
2017 marks a very exciting time for the family of Holy Cross Lutheran Church and School here in Wichita, Kansas! We will be celebrating the 75th Anniversary of our congregation and the 500th anniversary of the Reformation (as well as the 100th anniversary of the Lutheran Laymen’s League and the 75th anniversary of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League’s). We have so many blessings for which to be grateful and 2017 promises to be filled with activities, fun, music, fellowship, worship opportunities, and the celebration of many blessings bestowed on Holy Cross!
A 75th Anniversary Core Committee has spent an entire year making plans, setting dates and securing venues, but there is still work to be done in order for these plans to become a reality. We encourage you, and all the members of Holy Cross, to be fully involved in further planning and implementing a year-long calendar of celebratory activities. This will be a great time for all of us to meet new people the Lord is bringing to Holy Cross!
A magnetic “2017 Save the Date Event Guide” has been mailed to all members. Our prayer is that you will make your personal and family 2017 plans to include as many of these exciting events as possible. We also hope that you will use this handy tool to invite neighbors, friends, family, and co-workers to join us. Please pick up additional magnets in the church office to share with others.
We are looking forward to praising God, thanking Him for His rich blessings and joining along many others throughout 2017 as we continue to be “Rooted in the Word, and Growing in Christ!”
